Breaking Barriers and Celebrating Black Youth Excellence: The 'Who I Really Am' Campaign

In a powerful and inspiring move, the CEE Toronto Executive Director, Agapi Gessesse, and their dedicated team recently appeared on CTV National to shed light on their remarkable initiative, "Black Youth Can," co-created in partnership with Publicis Groupe Canada. This campaign not only addresses the prevailing hiring biases in Canada but also serves as a platform for empowering Black youth to speak up and celebrate their achievements. Together, they are breaking down barriers and showcasing the vibrant talents of Black youth, one hoodie at a time


The heart of this initiative lies in the campaign titled "WHO I REALLY AM." It employs custom-designed hoodies, proudly worn by real CEE alumni, as a canvas for sharing their individual stories, passions, and successes. These hoodies transcend mere clothing; they become potent wearable résumés that challenge and overturn the stereotypes frequently associated with the attire of Black youth.


Being a part of this remarkable campaign, representing CEE Toronto, and sharing their personal stories is a privilege deeply cherished by everyone involved. These hoodies symbolize more than just fashion; they are powerful tools in the fight against harmful narratives and assumptions often placed upon Black youths. They provide a medium through which young Black individuals can express themselves authentically and counter stereotypes.

Together, they are creating a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

This campaign goes beyond personal growth; it extends its impact to families and the broader community. The opportunities created through initiatives like "Black Youth Can" are not just about individual success. They send a significant social message by supporting lifestyles and breaking down societal barriers. Black youth achieving success in their respective fields become shining examples and mentors for younger generations, showing them that their dreams are achievable, regardless of prevailing stereotypes and prejudices.
