To all nice girl/nice guy entrepreneurs!
Today's blog post is o dedicated to you personally. Let start by saying having a "nice person" personality it can be both a blessing and a curse. At times, running a business will open up your eyes and mind. You might want to re-evaluate being Ms. Nice Girl or Mr. Nice Guy
Trust me! As an entrepreneur, I’m still learning to get used to saying “no”. Today's focus piece, I want to dedicate my post to the following topic: “Learn to say NO without feeling guilty”. How you can develop some tactics and attribution to comfortably say no to things and put you prioritize first.
I was just discussing some things with my colleague early this weekend. We both took a deeper look at the importance of saying no without having to give an explanation. Sometimes it is necessary to prioritize projects so saying "no" is needed. Other times, understanding the value of your "no" is required as a response. Not every brand deal coming through is an automated “yes”. Not every collaboration brought to the table meets the offer. At this point, if the deal isn’t aligning with your brand's value, it's a straight NO.
F MY LIFE MOMENT!
How many times you find yourself sitting on your desk with your hands on your face similar to this girl in the picture above. Saying to yourself "F MY LIFE" how I am going to get all these done.
From 2013 to 2016, I was all over town and cities doing big shows, small projects basically saying yes to everything coming my way. Until I realize in 2016, when my body was telling me I need to catch a break and stop overworking myself. I was sleeping less, always on the road, pulling all-nighter both for school, work, and side hustling in the fashion industry. To the public eye, I was winning and creating a name for myself. In private, I was dealing with health issues and complications that I did not understand why. Until late 2016, I've decided to put everything on pause, take a plane ticket to Europe to stay there for a few months to clear my mind. That's why I start realizing the bigger picture.
THE GOLDEN MOMENT
My wealth is also wealth, I want to be 80 years enjoying my success without health complications. I want to live a fulfilling life knowing I made good business discussions and doing it with purpose. Not because it was something offered to me at the table seem like a good idea. I wrote down things I want to do once I come back home. I am going to say yes to things that either will put in the directions of my goals or has social civic value.
TOO MANY YES - TO MANY NIGHT TIME CATCHING UP
Saying YES to too many projects or collaboration will put your behind. As a result, you start pulling out allnighter to meet deadlines. It becomes an ongoing circus circle. Do not get me wrong sometimes you need to pull an all-nighter for a big project to ensure that is done correctly. But if you are doing this every day or every week then you got a problem boss.
The moment you started saying No, Thanks!
When you have a nice girl or boy personality you tend to please people. You have a caring heart who just naturally wants to help out. You would rather but your important project behind and jump on your colleague, strangers projects without realizing you why taking forever to release that collections, finish that book deal, or complete your schoolwork. I've read many books on personal development, few things that stood up were also prioritization, goal setting and minimize distractions.
Just remember you saying NO, is not selfish! It just means not NOW. Let's try this some other time. Learn to work smarter not harder - WORK LIKE A BOSS!
