Embrace change, endure chaos, and emerge transformed.
As the world becomes a more digital place, we cannot forget about the human connection - Adam Neumann
Dorothy Vaughan was a pioneer in both mathematics and civil rights, breaking through racial and gender barriers in a field that had been predominantly male and white. Joining NASA's predecessor, NACA, in 1943, Vaughan became part of a team of "human computers," a group of mathematicians responsible for performing complex calculations by hand before the advent of electronic computers.
Historical Moment For BLACK FEMALE Trailblazer
In 1949, she became the first Black supervisor at NACA, leading the West Area Computing Unit, a segregated group of Black women mathematicians. Under her leadership, these women performed crucial calculations that contributed to everything from aircraft safety tests to the earliest efforts in space exploration.
Vaughan foresaw the rise of electronic computers and taught herself and her team FORTRAN, a high-level programming language. This decision ensured that her team remained indispensable as NASA transitioned to a new era of technology.
Her contributions were only recently recognized with the publication of Hidden Figures, which spotlighted her remarkable career and legacy.
Dorothy Vaughan’s story exemplifies resilience, vision, and the power of lifting others up—she not only broke new ground for herself but empowered others to follow in her footsteps. Her dedication laid the groundwork for future generations of women and minorities at NASA and in STEM fields around the world.
The stories of Dorothy Vaughan, Katherine Johnson, and Mary Jackson remind us of the groundbreaking contributions made by Black women who were often unsung heroes of the Space Race. Through sheer resilience and talent, these three women transcended social barriers and opened doors for others, leaving an indelible mark on NASA and history. Their legacy of inclusion, empowerment, and excellence continues to inspire young scientists, mathematicians, and engineers today, proving that diversity is essential to the progress of science and society.
