As a results, I have pretty good understanding of the difference between the two. I am going to provide you with a solid answer below explaining in details what each career role has to offer. For example, one colleague of mine in Toronto focuses on understand how Instagram platforms work in terms brand awareness, user engagement, influence marketing etc. Furthermore, you can choose to master your knowledge in on specific channel or specific task like content creator.

The planning process Social Media Marketer:
My role as SMM requires different knowledge and strategy. Each Social platform has a unique user behaviour and interest in which we can alter the brand focus to capture their attention. During the content creation process we need have clear message and time in which that message will be posted and distributed across social media channels.
In addition, managing social media profiles is be overwhelming. You need to pay attention to details, trends, and carefully communicate brand's voice on daily basis. Fortunately, Hootsuite is great managing tools that every Social Media account manger should have to keep all channel in one place and organized.
The planning process Digital Marketer
My role as DM requires a prolong planning strategy. Initial stage is building persona which a semi-fictional character presents an ideal customer. Then identify online marketing goals between the business and personal interest. Moreover, I look into evaluating an existing channels and assets, audits social platforms, Other part of my work involves campaign creation on Google ads, set up CRM automations, produced Email marketing newsletter weekly. I am also Graphic Designer which makes my job little bit easier because I am also involve in the design creations aspect. This helps keep the message clear and consistent.
Being a Digital Marketer it helps when you have other artistic skills or copyright skills to merge the two together. It makes you an exceptional asset in DM world.
